Chomp, Chomp, Chomp: Students and the Credit Crunch…

January 28, 2009
By Peter Starr

As has been noted on this blog before, the current financial situation and resulting credit crunch is a massive pile of dog mash for pretty much everyone.

For us students over in university land this has meant shed loads of bad stuff. Obviously the lack of graduate jobs is worrying, but my main concerns are much more severe.

Since Freshers’ Week the price of cheapo pasta from Somerfield’s has doubled in price from 20p to 41p. To put this global crisis in perspective, with 40p I used to be able to buy a bag of pasta and two Freddo bars – that day is a thing of the past. Shocking indeed.

My other grief lies with the fact that it’s also ruined my daily 40 minute commute into Uni. Whilst the Metro is not the finest publication on the planet, it does a lovely job of filling a highly tedious bus journey with news titbits. But since the big crunch kicked in, I’ve been reading the same bad news for months and I’m still not entirely sure what’s going on (something to do with banks running out of money?). How come all these banks in trouble didn’t think to get a part time job or give Ocean finance a call? Fools.

To be honest though this whole caboodle hasn’t been all bad news, its created a completely acceptable alibi to getting out of virtually anything.

Next time you get:

• Invited to a birthday bash you cant be arsed to go to
• Invited to go see a crap chick flick
• Invited to go see a mate at a Uni fricking miles away
• Asked by a family member where their birthday present is
• Told your accommodation fees/rent are due
• Told you’re late for work etc.

Pull a pained expression, shrug a bit and say: “Pfft, sorry mate – credit crunch”. This, followed by another rueful sigh and mumbling something about throwing money around willy-nilly, should be enough to sort things out.

Anyway, money is overrated. Notes have been designed not to fit in your wallet, coppers make your fingers smell funny and having too much change in my pockets makes my trousers fall down. Bovvered?

Wow excellent breakdown there, your website article had been truly informative. It is best to think about getting to be a teacher or some thing, that which you simply described earlier mentioned is actually pretty complicated but a second grader might have recognized it.

Thank you for sharing all these wonderful threads. In addition, the right travel plus medical insurance approach can often eliminate those considerations that come with visiting abroad. A new medical emergency can soon become expensive and that’s likely to quickly decide to put a financial problem on the family finances. Having in place the perfect travel insurance deal prior to setting off is definitely worth the time and effort. Thanks a lot

you are correct to an eextnt. There are not many Americans left that remember the Great Depression and the lessons to be learned from it. My father grew up in the depression and drilled it into my head to save money at all cost ..live below your means and don’t go into debt. but ..the younger generation never learned these old lessons. Another problem is that credit cards are far to easy to obtain. Years ago it was not easy for anyone to get a credit card
