Student paper’s editors resign over offensive magazine
The editors of Oxford’s student paper – Cherwell – have had to resign, following the fallout from a satirical magazine released by Cherwell staff.
You’d think that following the ‘Bring A Fit Jew’ debacle students with a high profile at Oxford would be a bit more careful. This might seem a bit unfair, but they have to remember that the press are like flies to shit when it comes to Oxbridge stories.
Being careful is quite a vague notion, but I think we can all agree that producing ‘a front-page piece on two students sexually abusing and killing babies’ in an admittedly private magazine is a bit of a dumb move.
One (rather dubious) source claims to have seen the offending piece, and describes it thus:
The front headline reads, “fury over Cherwell editors’ infant buggery party”. The article ends “Fucking niggers. Banter!”. The backpage is every woman staffer photoshopped onto porn. The comment section claims a local busker “flew one of the planes on 9/11, Well, he fucking did.”
Risky, but I’m sure very amusing if you were one of the fifty people the magazine was meant to reach. However, students say and do far worse things than producing a satirical magazine with some pretty crass and offensive jokes.
I cannot help but feel sorry for the two new editors of Cherwell – Sian Cox-Brooker and Michael Bennett – who were essentially forced to reign, despite (although not according to the Mail) having little to do with the publication, it having been produced under the previous regime. They did the honorable thing, though, and should be applauded for that at least.
This magazine was not intended to offend and had an audience (before the nationals got involved) of just fifty. It would have been difficult for either of them to hang on to their position when the national press got involved. The magazine produced was offensive and the fact that it was made in jest doesn’t take away from this. Those behind the magazine were foolish, but nothing more.
It was satire. Get over it.
(P.s. If you want a more wholesome satirical experience, may I suggest The Tart – a mightily fine organ.)
