An ode to SuBo

By Alice-May Purkiss

When Susan Boyle appeared on our TV screens, just those few weeks ago, everyone was confused by the fantastic voice that came from the mouth of that bizarre, eccentric and unusual woman.

It was TV gold to say the least.  Simon Cowell’s face when she began to sing was the epitome of what Britain’s Got Talent is supposed to be about; finding talent in unlikely places – and I think I’m not alone when I say I thought that Susan Boyle was an unlikely place to find talent.

That first audition catapulted SuBo (catchy nickname coined by the tabloids – incidentally, I love it!) into the public eye.   She was on front pages of papers, she was on the news, and she was blogged about. Everyone had their say. The media jumped on the peculiar woman with the curious talent from a great height.

Even the USA got involved, with her appearing on Oprah and US News Bulletins. She went from being known by so few people to being known by pretty much everyone.  Even if you’re not interested in Britain’s Got Talent, you would probably know what Susan Boyle was about, and if you didn’t I can only imagine you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks.

But on Saturday, she didn’t win.  She was gracious with the talented Diversity, proud almost that they had succeeded where she had not.  The nation, though impressed by Diversity’s obvious talent and skill, were and remain shocked.  No-one expected her not to win.  Perhaps even Diversity voters expected her to win.

And after she didn’t win on Saturday night, apparently, the pressure that the media had been reporting all week got to be all too much, and subsequently she has checked herself into The Priory after being examined by doctors on Sunday evening.

It’s a shame to say the least, but it doesn’t seem as surprising as the fact that she didn’t win.  The pressure of that amount of exposure would be enough to test anyone’s strengths, especially someone who is clearly as delicate as SuBo is.  I don’t mean that to sound as condescending as it does, but I don’t really know how else to put it.

All in all, it just seems like Susan Boyle has been a victim of mass media frenzy, which has worn her out to an extreme level, but despite all of this, I’m kind of glad she didn’t win.  It’s my opinion that if she had won, it would have all been a bit too much.

As it is, she was a perfect runner up.  She was kind and respectful to Diversity and their win, and this way, she gets the well-deserved break she needs, and hopefully the press will let her have some space for a while.

You can tell I’m a student, simply by how much I love BGT.
