London: it's fun to be a student here, but it sure as hell ain't cheap

Attending movie premiers, going to a sing along with Pink in Trafalgar Square and dancing along with a Chinese Dragon. All this didn’t cost me a penny and is just a small taste of what the capital has to offer. Do you want to get an education from some of the most renowned Universities in the world while having a hell of a good time? Well then London is the place for you. No other city in the UK can compare to the amazing opportunities this city has to offer.

The Great Bits

Everyday is different. One day you could be checking out Daniel Craig or Elle McPherson at the premier of the new James Bond movie. The next you could be heading down to Liverpool Street station for a silent disco. The best part for us students, since we have really small pockets is that all this is free. Just go online and surf the web to find out where to go.

The nightlife in London is exceptional. Students hit the centre on a regular basis, taking advantage of the various student offers pubs, bars and clubs have to offer. The University’s Student Union also organises various events throughout the year which are cheaper then heading to central and also great fun.

London has something for everyone. If you want to soak up culture London is home to some of the best museums and art galleries in the world. There are always various exhibitions taking place and most museums won’t charge you for entry.

If you love to go shopping or just window shop then you are in heaven. There is the famous Oxford Street where you will spot celebs once in a while and also the recently opened Westfield which is the biggest shopping centre in Europe. The centre has all of the high street labels and shops as well as a special section called The Village which is home to the best designers in the world like Dior, Prada and Tiffany.
And for those who are interested in the Indie scene. Camden, Brick Lane and Shoreditch are the hot spots for you. Most bars and clubs around Brick Lane and Shoreditch won’t charge you for entry and the vibe and atmosphere there is great.

The Not So Great Bits

Money, Money, Money! Living in London is defiantly more expensive than studying in any other city in the UK. The halls will cost you more than average and when you move out your flat or house will also be more expensive.

Most clubs in Central London will charge you between £10 – £15 for entry (on a non student night) while most clubs in other cities will charge you far less. Pubs, bars and clubs will also overcharge you for drinks so keep your eye out for special nights where you can use your student discount.

London is a city that never sleeps and is always buzzing. It can be hard to keep up with its pace and things can get a little stressful. Make sure you take time out to chill once in a while.

The Final Verdict

London is more expensive but the government takes that into account and gives you a little extra financial help. The Capital has tons to offer and great career prospects. It’s easy to find a job and pull your weight. In this multicultural city you get to meet people from all over the world and have a blast doing it.
